2019 Brigada Eskwela Message of DepEd Sec. Briones

The Department of Education (DepEd) officially kicked off the 16th Brigada Eskwela, with the theme “Matatag na Bayan para sa Maunlad na Paaralan,” on May 16 at Alfonso Central School in Alfonso, Cavite.

2019 Brigada Eskwela Message of DepEd Secretary Briones

“Today is one of those many occasions when Filipinos across the country gather and prove that quality education is a top priority and commitment. Filipinos from all walks of life dedicate a day or two to volunteer their time, energy, and resources to ensure that the youth will have a clean, safe, and conducive learning environment come the first day of class. Without a doubt, Brigada Eskwela brings out the best in Filipinos─that is the spirit of bayanihan.

Last year alone, volunteers nationwide ballooned from 11 million in 2017 to 22 million in 2018, while generated resources reached a total of P4.66 billion. We can safely say that there has never been a lack of support for the education sector. After all, education is not the business of DepEd alone, it is the responsibility of our communities; it is a national responsibility.

But more than painting or cleaning schools, we must also ensure that we provide our learners with the essentials of quality basic education. Ang Brigada, hindi lang week-long, dapat year-long so we may ensure that our learners are equipped with what they need and that they are safe.

With this year’s theme, “Matatag na Bayan para sa Maunlad na Paaralan,” we look forward to a Brigada that showcases more community involvement, strengthens partnerships, and provides our learners with good learning environment. More importantly, we look forward to a Brigada that exceeds the usual outcomes and sets the bar for volunteerism a bit higher.

Most of all, today is one of those few occasions when Filipinos across the country set aside differences and become integral members of a united community with a common goal: to nurture lifelong learners whose values and competencies enable them to contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

Maraming salamat, magandang umaga at TARA Na, BRIGADA na!”
