The Department of Education (DepEd) announces the celebration of the 77th Araw ng Kagitingan, and Philippine Veterans Week. These celebrations are pursuant to Executive Order No. 203, s. 1987 entitled Providing a List of Regular Holidays and Special Days to be Observed Throughout the Philippines and for Other Purposes, DepEd Memorandum No. 004, s. 2019 entitled 2019 National Observances and Commemorations and Related Activities, Presidential Proclamation No. 466-A, s. 2007 entitled Declaring the Period April 5 to 11 of Every Year as Philippine Veterans Week.
All government agencies including government-owned and controlled corporations, nongovernmental organizations, private associations and institutions, and individuals are enjoined to assist, cooperate, and participate in this historic commemoration.
The celebration aims to increase awareness of the Araw ng Kagitingan as a shining moment of courage and commitment to freedom by the World War II (WWII) veterans.
Regional, schools division, and district offices, as well as schools are enjoined to carry out meaningful activities integrated in school programs or events, as well as in classroom discussions in the following related subject areas:
a. Sibika at Kultura;
b. Heograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibika (HEKASI);
c. Araling Panlipunan;
d. Values Education or Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao;
e. Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH);
f. Filipino; and
g. English.
Teachers shall receive appropriate service credits as stipulated in DepEd Order (DO) No. 53, s. 2003 entitled Updated Guidelines on Grant of Vacation Service Credits to Teachers, and DO 84, s. 2003 entitled Addendum to DepEd Order No. 53, s. 2003 (Updated Guidelines on Grant of Vacation Service Credits to Teachers), while nonteaching personnel should attend programs and activities on official time only.
Expenses incurred relative to the conduct of the activities during the celebration shall be charged to local funds or sourced from nongovernmental organizations, municipality/city funds and/or civic spirited clubs and organizations subject to usual accounting and auditing rules and regulations.
The travel allowance and per diem of the DepEd National Technical Working Group members in attending and monitoring the different activities shall be charged to Building Partnerships and Linkages Programs (BPLP) Funds, subject to its availability, and the usual accounting and auditing rules and regulations.
